Tired of deep dents from minor impacts, we decided to make a new bumper for our truck.
We decided to make it very Heavy Duty!
|
The first two pics are just how bad the fenders were. They could not
handle the weight of men climbing on them with heavy mason materials.
Third pic is the trailer backing in for surgery. |

New fenders are made of 1/8" thick steel. Framed out in 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x
1/8" thick angle iron. The original center support was 2" x 1/4" flat
stock so we left it in place. Second pic is one fender completed. Third
pic is a classic example of poor weld penetration, this is the bottom
hinge point for the tailgate on the right side. It was "welded" to a
formed piece of thin steel. |

You can see more of the poor penetration at the top of the formed steel
piece the hinge is welded to. The piece actually moved away from the weld.
Last pic is the hinge pieces welded on properly. The correct size pin in
place, with a keeper chain welded to it. This was done outdoors working
around the rain, or there would be some more pics of the process and
completion. |

Camper Trailer Hitch Customer came to us last year to weld on a receiver tube so he could mount a bicycle rack on his camper bumper. We advised him the bumper was too thin, and the hitch would tear off. He called a few weeks later to tell us we were right. He brought it back to us in the spring of this year to weld on a REAL bumper, the hitch, and some new skid wheels. |
